About the role:

The Section of Paediatric Infectious Disease at Imperial College London is seeking to recruit at least one enthusiastic Research Assistant to join our Bioinformatics team working on host pathogen interactions in infectious disease, multi-omic integration and biomarker identification, with a focus on tuberculosis disease and the role of age and sex on host immunology and biosignatures.

What you would be doing:

You will be performing cutting edge research utilising statistical and machine learning models to contribute to the advancement of understanding and diagnosis of tuberculosis disease. You will develop the data science and machine learning expertise to analyse whole blood RNAseq, gene expression microarray, proteomic and imaging datasets, and develop methods for mining and integration of multiple host-omics data by using one of the larger collections of clinical RNA-Seq and other modalities data in paediatric TB research in the world. Some of your key research duties and responsibilities would include:

  • To process and analyse large biological datasets from high throughput technologies.
  • To apply software tools for data mining.
  • To assist in the development of algorithms to explore and understand the data.
  • To identify biomarkers for diagnosis and prognostic purposes in infectious diseases.
  • To apply/develop adequate tools for and biological interpretation of the data.
  • To visualise model results and data to generate insight.
  • To always ensure the validity and reliability of data.
  • To maintain accurate and complete records of all findings.
  • To write reports for submission to research sponsors.
  • To present findings to colleagues and at conferences.
  • To submit publications to refereed journals.
  • To attend relevant workshops and conferences as necessary.
  • To develop contacts and research collaborations within the College and the wider community.
  • To promote the reputation of the Group, the Department and the College.

What we are looking for:

Essential

  • Education: Hold a relevant BSc degree in Natural Science, Maths, Engineering or an equivalent subject
  • Education: Hold an MSc in Bioinformatics, Human Genetics, Infection and Immunity or equivalent
  • Proficiency with R or Python
  • Knowledge of research methods and statistical procedures
  • Ability to conduct a detailed review of recent literature
  • Strong quantitative skills and experience and knowledge of statistics
  • Ability to develop and apply new concepts
  • Creative approach to problem-solving
  • Willingness to work as part of a team and to be open-minded and cooperative
  • Flexible attitude towards work
  • Discipline and regard for confidentiality and security at all times
