Closes: 15th October 2024
Job Ref: SCI325724

We seek to recruit a Research Associate/Fellow to join our team developing a ground-breaking technique based on diffuse Raman spectroscopy for in-vivo measurements deep in tissue, aiming to detect molecular changes caused by foreign body response. Understanding the time-and spatial-dependent molecular processes underpinning foreign body response is important for a broad range of applications, from the development of new drugs to implantable medical devices.

In this project, a recently developed Raman spectrometer (optimised for diffuse and spatially-offset Raman spectroscopy for sub-cutaneous measurements) and computer modelling of light propagation in tissue will be used to monitor the formation of fibrotic tissue in small animal models. This project is based on a long-term research collaboration between the Biophotonics Group (School of Physics and Astronomy), School of Life Sciences and School of Pharmacy, currently funded by the National Centre for Replacement, Refinement and Reduction of Animals in Research (NC3Rs https://www.nc3rs.org.uk). This project is an excellent opportunity for inter-disciplinary training. Funding includes stipend, tuition fees, research consumables and travel to international conferences.

What we offer:

• A world-class research environment including state of the art Raman spectroscopy, computer modelling and biomaterials development.

• A supportive environment for researchers as signatories of the Researcher Development Concordat (www.vitae.ac.uk/policy/concordat).

• Opportunities to produce high-quality publications.

• Development of multidisciplinary skills in Raman spectroscopy, computer modelling of light propagation, and clinical translation of biophotonics technologies.

• Collaboration opportunities with internationally leading researchers in biomaterials and pharmaceuticals development, as well as companies interested in our project results and partnering in spin-off initiatives.

• Travel opportunities to visit international partners and attend conferences

What you should have:

• A PhD or near to completion of a PhD, in Physics, Chemistry or Biomedical Engineering.

• Knowledge of Raman spectroscopy, spatially offset Raman spectroscopy, multivariate statistical analysis of data.

• Excellent written and oral communication skills, and excellent interpersonal skills and ability to build relationships and collaborate with others, both internally and externally.

The post is offered on a full-time (36.25 hours per week) fixed-term contract until 30th September 2025. Job share arrangements may be considered.

Requests for secondment from internal candidates may be considered on the basis that prior agreement has been sought from both your current line manager and the manager of your substantive post, if you are already undertaking a secondment role.

As part of our commitment to improving equality, diversity, and inclusion within the school, shortlisted candidates will be given the opportunity to talk to a member of staff representing women, racially minoritized people, LGBTQIA+, or disabilities communities. This will be separate from the assessment process and will play no role in the decision to appoint.

Informal enquiries may be addressed to Professor Ioan Notingher, email ioan.notingher@nottingham.ac.uk Please note that applications sent directly to this email address will not be accepted.
