The new Building Safety Regulator (BSR) sits within HSE and is responsible for implementing a new regulatory regime and strategy for higher-risk residential buildings in England. The BSR oversees the safety and performance of the wider built environment, driving cultural change and increasing the competence of the building control profession.

We are now looking for two Senior Research Scientists to join our Risk Team at our Science and Research Centre in Buxton on a full-time, permanent basis. We can accept part-time applicants who can commit to working a minimum of 30 hours per week.

The role

As a Senior Research Scientist, you will deliver research to support the BSR through research and scientific evidence that will help prevent building failures in future.

Specifically, you will deliver high-quality research that focuses on building safety and risk management. You will publish papers and conference presentations in order to improve and broaden our scientific reputation whilst also helping to improve the public understanding of building risk.

Reviewing and evaluating technical evidence, you will undertake risk assessments and safety casework to support regulatory developments. You will also develop technical solutions and support workshops for risk evaluation and management.

Additionally, you will:

  • Develop relationships across HSE to enable the development and use of scientific methods to support building safety
  • Work with regulatory bodies to support a consistent approach to risk
  • Provide technical and scientific leadership or steering for various projects and initiatives
  • Update HSE risk guidance

About you

To be considered as a Senior Research Scientist, you will need practical experience and knowledge of at least one of the following areas:

  • Engineering (civil, structural, fire or environmental)
  • Architecture
  • Construction management
  • Building surveying
  • Building control
  • Building safety

You will also need the following:

  • Experience planning and delivering research or technical projects to time, cost and quality targets
  • Experience of technical project writing and presenting
  • Competency in facilitating workshops and/or studies with a diverse range of stakeholders
  • A Masters or PhD in a relevant area
