The role

Electron Microscopy (EM) is one of the key underpinning technologies in life science research and the Verkade research group in the School of Biochemistry is heavily reliant on advanced applications of EM to their research. The position of the Technical Specialist in Electron Microscopy Research will fill a critical role in delivering the aims of a Leverhulme Trust grant in collaboration with the Juusola research group at the University of Sheffield. Close collaboration and communication between and with the Verkade and Juusola groups will be an essential part of the role.

What will you be doing?

The successful applicant will be responsible for performing electron microscopic experiments, both TEM and SEM based.

Standard Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the effective execution of EM experiments performed as part of the research carried out in the Verkade research group.
  • Develop and maintain familiarity with the project aims and an awareness of the research area.
  • Collate and report on research or project outputs as required compiling or writing initial versions of communications and reports.
  • Plan and organise own work activities as well as support those of others to ensure that deadlines are met.

Work in partnership with key (internal and external) stakeholders to co-ordinate resource allocation, work scheduling and provide advice and support to all staff and students linked to the project and Verkade research group.

You should apply if

  • BSc or equivalent in a relevant field, plus experience in a relevant role, or significant relevant work experience.
  • Extensive experimental experience and knowledge of the field of Biomedical Electron Microscopy.
  • Proven planning and organising skills. Able to manage conflicting deadlines, non-routine and urgent events.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to take ownership of problems and find solutions and build relationships and interact effectively at all levels and with a wide range of internal and external contacts.
  • Self-motivated able to work autonomously and to deadlines as well as ability to contribute as team member, motivating and advising others to schedule/deliver project deadlines.
  • Flexible, adaptable and collaborative approach.
