About the Role

For informal enquiries, please contact Dr Sul Ademi (Lead Engineer, Electric Machines) at S.Ademi@warwick.ac.uk.

This post is part of the Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) initiative funded by Innovate UK. KTP is a UK-wide programme that has been helping businesses for almost 50 years to improve their competitiveness and productivity through the better use of knowledge, technology and skills that reside within the UK Knowledge Base. An exciting opportunity exists to manage a KTP between the highly regarded Warwick Manufacturing Group (WMG) at the University of Warwick, and Shaftec Automotive Components Limited a company, based in Hockley, Birmingham.

Shaftec has been supplying remanufactured and new parts to the motor trade for over 20 years and is now firmly established as the leading transmission, steering and braking supplier to the UK aftermarket. Not only do we offer customers the largest range of premium products, backed by the highest levels of availability but also exceptional customer service which is supported by our ISO:9001:2015 accreditation.

Shaftec continually strives to increase its current customer base within the UK, as well as expanding into left-hand drive market opportunities in Europe. This KTP opportunity will support both of these objectives.

The individual taking this position will lead the project to develop a deeper understanding of the technical requirements needed for electric power steering (EPS) unit controllers, including testing and diagnosing end-of-life steering systems, thereby informing remanufacturing processes. Both existing and under remanufacture EPS systems are within the scope of the investigation and knowledge creation exercise. Outputs of the project will be used to support planning and commercial exploitation of opportunities for the remanufacture of EPS systems. The Associate will also work closely with the Shaftec team to improve the knowledge base of the marketing and sales team in electrification.

The successful applicant will be employed by the University of Warwick, but will be based at Shaftec in Birmingham. The Associate will work closely with the Shaftec EPS team as well as receiving support and guidance from academics and engineers from the University of Warwick’s Power Electronics, Machines and Drives (PEMD) group within WMG. The Associate will have access to the equipment in the Power Electronics Laboratory and new Winding Centre of Excellence (WCE) at WMG to demonstrate the viability of EPS testing methods in the laboratory environment. The Associate will gain experience of working with suppliers in a manufacturing environment and will be well placed for future employment opportunities in transport electrification, particularly in manufacturing. There is the likelihood of employment within Shaftec to continue the knowledge transfer into the company.

CLOSING DATE: Wednesday 11 September 2024 at 11.55 pm
