Senior AI Research Engineer

University of Cambridge - University Information Services

Are you interested in an exciting and unique opportunity to help shape and deliver the UK's first National AI Research Service? We are looking for an experienced and enthusiastic AI research engineer to work on Dawn, the most powerful AI supercomputer in the UK. Dawn is now being deployed for use by scientists across the UK in globally important research fields such as clean energy, personalized medicine and climate science and we need your help to develop and exploit state of the art tools and workflows to drive exploitation of this world leading resource.

Who you'll be working with

The role is based in the University of Cambridge's Research Computing Services, a leading UK National Supercomputing Centre, providing facilities and services to world-renowned scientists, clinicians and engineers across the UK and beyond. You'll be part of a growing team of specialist AI, Software and Systems Engineers dedicated to Dawn, working with a wide range of stakeholders across multiple disciplines and institutions.

What you will do

You'll be working on a diverse range of AI software projects and on user engagement. You will be comfortable adapting your approach to meet the needs of the project, client and team. You will be working with advanced AI tools and methods on projects with experienced users as well as novice users and will have an engaging approach to both. You will be able to build relationships at all levels with experience of influencing and negotiating with stakeholders to achieve goals.

You will be collaborating with world leading academic research teams, and researchers in the public and the commercial sector to deliver on their project goals.

What you will have

  • Practical experience with some of Natural Language Processing, Machine Learning, Deep Learning and Statistical Modelling techniques. Experience with Large Language Model training and fine-tuning frameworks would be particularly welcome.
  • Proficiency in software engineering.
  • A good understanding of data structures and algorithms and data oriented approaches to problem-solving.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate with experienced as well as novice clients and stakeholders.

Alongside a significant knowledge of AI tools and techniques, an interest in working with High Performance Computing or Research Software is essential but experience in these fields is not crucial if you have the right attitude and enthusiasm.

What we can offer

  • 41 days holiday per year including bank holidays.
  • A generous pension.
  • The University is supportive of hybrid working, where some work is undertaken on University premises and some in a remote working environment.  The aim of our approach is to enable as many staff as possible to work in a hybrid way if they wish and where their role allows.
  • A friendly and supportive team environment.
  • The opportunity to shape and influence how we work.

More information about the role is attached in the 'Further Particulars' document.
