We are looking to recruit a Research Co-ordinator to perform and coordinate research in electrocatalysis in the group of Professor Alex Cowan. You will co-ordinate the research efforts of the electrocatalysis and electrolyser development team who focus on catalysts and devices for the areas of green hydrogen production and carbon dioxide reduction.
The group is led by Professor Alex Cowan of the Department of Chemistry at the University of Liverpool and the role is based in the Stephenson Institute for Renewable Energy (SIRE). The Cowan group studies the sustainable production of chemicals and fuels from abundant, and ideally waste, resources such as CO2, H2O, N2 using solar and renewable power. The group philosophy is to develop a detailed understanding of the factors controlling photo- and electrochemical reactions using advanced (non-linear and transient) spectroscopic studies. We then apply the design rules identified in the next generation of catalytic materials and devices. The successful candidate will join and co-ordinate the activities of the electrocatalysis laboratory, a newly refurbished space (2023) that offers a high-quality work-environment within SIRE.
The position is research based and aligns to the group’s activities on bipolar membrane (BPM) devices. A background in electrochemistry is essential and experience in the development or analysis of CO2 electrolysers, water electrolysers or BPM’s is highly desirable. You will assist with the regular surveying of the literature to ensure activity within the group is utilising the most appropriate methodologies and experimental approaches. A key aspect of the role is to generate new research ideas by leveraging recent developments in the literature into useful contributions to the project and the wider research portfolio of the group. You will assist with the drafting of research publications to ensure timely reporting of results. A demonstrated experience in the preparation of high-quality manuscripts is an important criterion for this post.
In addition to a high-level research contribution the successful applicant will be involved in day-to-day supervision of the wider research team, troubleshoot issues, representation of the group at major international conferences and at meetings with external collaborators, preparation of additional funding proposals (with co-investigator status where appropriate), and participation in recruitment activities (e.g., interviews for new PDRAs / PhDs). The ability to work within a team and to support other researchers is central to this post.
Key responsibilities and duties:
The position is suited to an ambitious researcher with an established track-record at postdoctoral research associate level. Your application should clearly highlight in a cover letter how your experience maps to the post objectives and the table of criteria for appointment (vide infra). Should you require any further details on the role, please contact Professor Alex Cowan acowan@liverpool.ac.uk
