The post

The Faculty of Environment, Science and Economy (ESE) wishes to recruit a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to participate in the Horizon Europe-funded GEORGE project (https://george-project.eu/), to study biogeochemical parameters related to climate change research in remote areas. This new, full-time, EU-funded post is available immediately on a two-year, fixed-term basis, with the possibility of a 24 months’ extension (subject to approval). The project revolves around the integration of novel sensors with uncrewed surface vehicles (USVs), using them to gather high-quality data in this challenging environment. The successful applicant will support the development and deployment of complex scientific equipment and will be responsible for the maintenance and repair of assets, the preparation of documentation, and participation in fieldwork.

The post will involve workshop and laboratory activities, along with data work and office duties. The successful applicant will be expected to support the work of the existing team with their experience and knowledge, acting as mentor and leader where appropriate, and will be confident in liaising with external collaborators/the funding body, along with disseminating and presenting research findings.

About you

The successful applicant will join Prof Ute Schuster’s research group, working collaboratively to ensure the success of the GEORGE project activities. In addition, the successful applicant will develop research objectives, projects and proposals, identify sources of research funding, contribute to the process of securing funds, and make presentations at conferences and other events.

Applicants will possess a relevant PhD or equivalent qualification/experience, possessing sufficient specialist knowledge in related scientific disciplines, as well as practical work in the laboratory and field (national, international, and at sea) including competence in electronics, to be able to successfully deliver project objectives.

The successful applicant will also be able to work collaboratively, supervise the work of others and act as team leader as required.

Applicants must be willing to travel frequently within the UK and abroad, including time spent at sea.
