We are a university with a national and international reputation for excellence, innovation and regional engagement, making a major contribution to the economic, social and cultural development of Northern Ireland.
Our core business activities are teaching and learning, widening access to education, research and innovation and technology and knowledge transfer.
- THE ROLE -
We seek to appoint a Research Associate to work on a “5G Film Anywhere” project funded by DSIT as part of the Belfast 5G Innovation Region (5GIR) programme. Ulster University has one of the UK’s leading Film and Virtual Production facilities, and the successful candidate will have the opportunity to work within high-tech environments at Studio Ulster and Ulster University to unlock the potential of 5G technology for remote Virtual Production.
The post holder will work within a multi-disciplinary team, in partnership with two other research associates, to help design, build, and deploy a state-of-the-art solution within the “5G Film Anywhere” context. In this project, we aim to develop an end-to-end solution for remote Virtual Production by combining 5G technology and a new innovative codec solution to achieve real-time, high-capacity radio links between on-location filming and production studios. They will develop hybrid multimedia algorithms and compression techniques for efficient 5G video transmission, focusing on immersive video, resource utilisation, and low-latency processing.
- ABOUT YOU -
The post holder must have:
- Undergraduate degree with a 2:1 qualification or higher in a technical discipline such as Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Telecommunication or Computer Science, or a closely related field with a focus on video coding, multimedia transmission, digital communications, signal processing, or 5G networks.
- Research experience or equivalent professional experience in relevant areas, such as multimedia systems, transmission, 5G networks, edge computing, or video compression standards.
- Strong coding and programming skills and experience using the core languages (e.g., MATLAB/Python/C++), tools, and IDEs for numerical and scientific applications.
