Depression and social anxiety are on the rise globally, especially among young adults. While healthy individuals tend to process social feedback optimistically and hold positive views of the self, those with depression and social anxiety often harbour negative self-beliefs and respond differently to feedback from their social environment. For example, individuals with depression may withdraw from social interactions, reinforcing a cycle of loneliness. This project aims to explore the impact of these negative self-schemata on the lives and relationships of young people through psychometric, computational and qualitative Expert-by-Experience approaches. Through this work, we hope to gain a better understanding of the mechanisms sustaining negative self-beliefs in depression and social anxiety, ultimately guiding psychosocial—and potentially neurobiological—interventions.
