This post is full time and fixed term to 29th January 2027.
We have an opportunity for a Research Associate to make a leading contribution to research on the measurement of sustainability at the urban scale.
The post is based in the ESRC-funded Urban Big Data Centre (UBDC), an internationally recognised centre of excellence in urban analytics and social data science. The research forms part of the NERC-funded GALLANT project (Glasgow as a Living Lab Accelerating Novel Transformation). In collaboration with Glasgow City Council, C40 Cities and the Doughnut Economics Action Lab, GALLANT has developed a framework to define a ‘thriving Glasgow’, balancing planetary boundaries with the social foundations for a good life. Working with Professor Nick Bailey and colleagues from across the University, this post will focus on the challenges of developing indicators to enable the tracking of Glasgow’s progress against this framework.
The job requires expertise in data-intensive research methods and familiarity with the use of traditional and new forms of data to develop social and/or ecological indicators. An awareness of conceptual frameworks for measuring sustainability would be an advantage. Working in a large, multi-disciplinary team, you will play a leading role in the production of evidence for progress towards a thriving Glasgow, interacting with the diverse stakeholder groups involved in the GALLANT project. Through research publications, you will have the opportunity to contribute to international debates on the conceptualisation and measurement of sustainability as well as wider literatures such as those on social indicators and critical data studies.
The post provides an outstanding opportunity to develop your research career as part of an internationally-leading centre for urban analytics and a member of a major partnership of researchers and city stakeholders. We will provide structured mentoring and support for career development to build your research skills and experience. You will benefit from formal and informal interactions with a diverse group of researchers at all career stages.
