Appointment Term: initial term of four years with a possibility of reappointment.

Remuneration: £5,000 per annum. Travel and subsistence expenses will be reimbursed.

Time Commitment: You will be expected to attend four in-person Board meetings per year plus additional occasional consultations with fellow Board members, the Executive Team, and Shareholders as needed.

Location: Meetings are held in person at Diamond Light Source Limited (Harwell Oxford Science and Innovation Campus, Didcot, Oxfordshire).

About the role:

UKRI, through STFC, is seeking a highly experienced and dedicated individual to join the Board of Directors at Diamond Light Source as a Non-Executive Director. This pivotal role offers a unique opportunity to help shape the strategic direction of one of the world’s leading synchrotron science facilities, supporting its goals, upholding high standards of governance, and driving continued performance and achievement.

What we’re looking for:

We are seeking an experienced leader in Life Sciences research, with a strong track record in multidisciplinary environments and an understanding of how synchrotron facilities contribute to solving life and medical science challenges.

You will bring:

  • Proven strategic leadership in research, with experience at a senior executive or non-executive level in large or complex organisations.
  • Insight into the UK and international research and innovation funding landscape, including current policy reforms.
  • A solid grasp of science, innovation, commercialisation, and the knowledge economy.
  • Strong analytical and strategic thinking, with the ability to navigate complex decisions and policy issues.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a collaborative, high-integrity approach to board-level governance.
  • The ability to provide constructive challenge and uphold the highest standards of ethical conduct.
