University of Oxford - Lady Margaret Hall

Location: Oxford
Salary: £8,284 to £9,154 per annum
Hours: Part Time
Contract Type: Fixed-Term/Contract
Placed On: 30th April 2025
Closes: 20th June 2025

From September 2025 (1-year fixed term, renewable)

Lady Margaret Hall (LMH) invites applications for a Stipendiary Lectureship in Applied Mathematics (3 hours), starting 1 September 2025. This is an ideal opportunity for an early career academic to gain teaching and administrative experience within Oxford’s renowned tutorial system while engaging with a lively academic community.

The post is offered for one year in the first instance, with the possibility of renewal subject to satisfactory performance. The Lecturer will provide an average of three hours per week of tutorial teaching in Applied Mathematics during Oxford’s three 8-week terms. The primary focus will be on first- and especially second-year undergraduate courses for students reading Mathematics and joint schools (including Maths & Stats, Maths & Philosophy, and Maths & Computer Science) at LMH. The successful candidate may also contribute to intercollegiate classes or supervise undergraduate projects where appropriate.

Teaching areas will include a selection of core topics from the first- and second-year syllabus, likely to encompass Differential Equations I and II, Waves and Fluids, Integral Transforms, and Calculus of Variations. Familiarity with additional second-year options such as Mathematical Biology, Numerical Analysis, or Quantum Theory would be welcome. Details of the Oxford undergraduate mathematics course can be found at: www.maths.ox.ac.uk.

The Lecturer will work closely with Professor Michael Monoyios (Applied Mathematics), and alongside colleagues in Pure Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science and the Philosophy of Mathematics. In addition to teaching responsibilities, the post includes administrative and pastoral duties such as setting and marking termly college exams ("collections"), writing tutorial reports, and participating in the undergraduate admissions process in December. Involvement in college life—including academic and social events with students—is warmly encouraged.

LMH is one of Oxford’s most diverse and dynamic colleges. Founded in 1878 to make Oxford education accessible to women for the first time, the College today supports over 700 students and a broad range of academic disciplines. Our beautiful site beside the University Parks provides a peaceful yet vibrant setting for study and community.

The salary will be in the range £8,284 - £9,154 (2024/25 rates) for the 3-hour post. The position is superannuated within the Universities Superannuation Scheme (USS). A research allowance of £183 per year is available, and the Lecturer will be entitled to weekday lunch and one formal dinner per week during term. College teaching rooms and shared workspace may be available, and the Lecturer will have membership of the Senior Common Room.

Applicants should have, or be close to completing, a doctorate in Mathematics, and demonstrate the ability to teach effectively in a tutorial context. A strong commitment to undergraduate teaching, pastoral care, and the wider academic life of the College is essential.

To apply, please submit a cover letter and CV as a single PDF via the LMH careers portal by noon on Friday 20 June 2025.
