Research Fellow in Neuroscience

University of Sussex - School of Life Sciences, Neuroscience

Location: Sussex, Falmer
Salary: £38,249 to £45,413 per annum, pro rata if part time, Grade 7
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Fixed-Term/Contract
Placed On: 7th May 2025
Closes: 12th May 2025
Job Ref: 40649

About the role

As a Research Fellow, you will join the Baden Lab, a highly collaborative and interdisciplinary neuroscience group within the School of Life Sciences at the University of Sussex. Our lab investigates how neural circuits process visual information and drive behaviour, as well as the evolutionary development of these visual systems. By studying a myriad of vertebrate species, we aim to understand the evolutionary differences and similarities in visual processing across phyla.

You will run and support research projects investigating visual processing in the zebrafish retina. This will include multi-electrode array recordings, development of complex visual stimulation environments, and the analysis of large-scale neural datasets. You will also be expected to assist with the oversight of zebrafish colonies and help train junior researchers. The position offers opportunities to present your work at national and international meetings, collaborate with external partners, and contribute to high-impact publications.

About you

You will hold a PhD in Neuroscience, Biology, or a related field, and have a strong background in electrophysiology, specifically retinal recordings and data analysis. You will have experience with zebrafish models, light stimulus design, hyperspectral imaging, and behavioural monitoring. You will be adept in coding and analysis using tools such as MATLAB and Python. Ideally, you will also hold a UK Home Office PIL licence and have a strong publication record. You will be a motivated, collaborative scientist with excellent organisational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
