About the School

The atmospheric science program at Nanjing University, founded in 1924, is one of the oldest atmospheric science disciplines established in China. Meteorology and atmospheric sciences in the School of Atmospheric Sciences (SAS) are the national key discipline and the national double first-class discipline, respectively, and SAS has ranked among the best Chinese meteorology departments in various discipline assessments and rankings. At present, SAS has a high-level research team, including 3 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and about 30 faculty members awarded by national-level talent programs.

SAS focuses on international scientific frontiers and serves grand national needs, and has actively engaged in high-level scientific research and top-notch talents cultivation. It is home to the State Key Laboratory of Severe Weather Meteorological Science and Technology (LASW), the Key Laboratory for Mesoscale Severe Weather of Ministry of Education (LMSWE), the Joint International Research Laboratory of Atmospheric and Earth System Sciences (JirLATEST), the Jiangsu Provincial Collaborative Innovation Center for Climate Change, China Meteorological Administration Key Laboratory for Climate Prediction Studies, China Meteorological Administration Radar Meteorology Key and the Station for Observing Regional Processes of the Earth System (SORPES). SAS has established long-term partnerships with world-class universities and institutes, and has enjoyed international reputation.

Positions

SAS now has opening for tenure-track associate professor or tenure-track assistant professor. Areas of specific interest include:

  1. Dynamics, thermodynamics, and physical processes of severe weather;
  2. Boundary layer and urban meteorology;
  3. Artificial intelligence and big data for meteorology;
  4. Climate dynamics and climate system;
  5. Atmospheric and earth system modeling, and planetary atmosphere numerical simulation.

Qualifications

The applicant should

  1. Commitment to academic teaching and research, in accordance with applicable laws and regulations.
  2. High standards of professional conduct, including adherence to teaching and research ethics; no history of criminal convictions or academic misconduct.
  3. Strong academic background: Ph.D. in Atmospheric Sciences or a closely related field. Candidates should have experience studying and working in leading research institutions, with a demonstrated record of academic excellence.
    1. For tenure-track Assistant Professor roles, ideally, at least two years of postdoctoral research experience.
    2. For tenure-track Associate Professor roles, ideally, at least four years of postdoctoral research experience.
  4. Proven teaching ability, including the capacity to deliver core and advanced courses effectively. Candidates should be familiar with modern teaching methodologies and possess strong verbal communication skills.
  5. Demonstrated research excellence and potential for continued academic development: a solid record of innovative research with international visibility and a clear and ambitious research agenda.

Supporting Materials for Application

  1. Three recommendation letters (referees including the PhD supervisor, academic head of the current institution, and a distinguished scholar in the field);
  2. Curriculum Vitae (in both Chinese and English);
  3. Three representative papers (typically peer-reviewed articles, monographs, or book chapters officially published or available online with a DOI prior to the application deadline specified in the recruitment notice; full-text versions must be uploaded);
  4. Other relevant attachments that demonstrate academic achievements.

Compensation Package and Support

  1. An annual salary (to be worked out individually);
  2. Start-up funding for scientific research;
  3. Qualification for graduate enrollment;
  4. Turnover apartment, housing subsidies, and eligible for purchasing commercial apartments provided by the university under considerable discount;
  5. Assistance in children enrollment in primary and secondary schools.
