About the School
The School of Geography and Ocean Science (SGOS) at Nanjing University is an internationally renowned center for geographical and oceanographical research and education, situated in one of the most prestigious universities in China.
SGOS is known as "the cradle of geography" in China, with rich history and significant contributions to the establishment of the field in the country. SGOS is originally founded as the Department of Geoscience in 1921 by Professor Kezhen Zhu. The department has been home to many renowned geographers and scholars, such as Kezhen Zhu, Huanyong Hu, Qiyun Zhang, Guozhang Huang, Xudan Li, Mei'e Ren, Ying Wang, and Chaolin Gu. Nanjing University consistently ranks in the top 7 universities in China, and ranks in the global top 10 universities for research in the 2023 Nature Index. Her geopraphy is ranked as one of the best in China.
Guided by theories in Earth System Science and human-land relationships, SGOS's research tackles the basic questions in geography and ocean science, as well as the grand challenges in China's development. SGOS innovates in Earth System Science, processes of geographical elements and global change, geomorphology, carbon cycle and carbon neutrality, land-sea interactions, land resources protection and utilization, maritime rights and security, territorial planning and urban-rural integrated development, tourism geography and national park management, remote sensing, and geographic information science.
There are 78 full-time faculties in SGOS, including 37 full professors, and 39 tenure-track associate professors and assistant professors. Among them, there are two academicians of Chinese Academy of Sciences/Chinese Academy of Engineering, 18recipients of national talent programs, one national teaching master, six principal investigators of National Key R&D Program of China and Program 973. SGOS is home to several high-level teaching and research platforms, including The Collaborative Innovation Center of South China Sea Studies, National 111 Talent Recruitment Base, Frontiers Science Center for Critical Earth Material Cycling, National Virtual Simulation Experimental Teaching Center for Earth System Science, Key Laboratory of Coast & Island Development of the Ministry of Education, Field Observation and Research Station of Huangshan National Park Ecosystem, Key Laboratory of Land Surface Satellite Remote Sensing Application Center of the Ministry of Natural Resources, Key Laboratory of Carbon Neutrality and Territorial Space Optimization, and Key Laboratory of Geographic Information Technology of Jiangsu Province. The school has severalprestigious research groups such as the Innovative Research Group of National Natural Science Foundation of China on landform process and the environment evolution, National Science and Technology Innovation Team in key fields of past climate change, Innovation Team of the Ministry of Education, Huang Danian-style Faculty Team of the Ministry of Education, and Excellent Scientific and Technological Innovation Team of Jiangsu Universities.
Positions
We currently have tenure-track position opening during 2024~2025, in the disciplines of physical geography, human geography, geographic information science or marine science. The position is offered at the rank of tenure-track assistant professor. Highly qualified applicants may apply for a tenure-track associate professor or tenured position, depending on negotiations with SGOS and Nanjing University.
