Hours of Work

Predicated on 40 hours per week (full-time), or on a part-time basis if preferred.
Due to the nature of the business, this may include flexible working hours, including evenings and weekends as required by the business or the Estates Manager.

About MPW Cambridge

Mander Portman Woodward (MPW) is a leading independent education provider with a strong national reputation. MPW Cambridge operates across two Victorian buildings in the heart of the city: Brookside and Panton Street. Brookside includes teaching rooms (class sizes 1–9), three science labs, an art room, supervised study rooms, an ICT suite, internet library, large exam room, and a café-equipped student common room. Panton Street provides additional teaching space and another student common room.

Job Purpose

We are building a new in-house Maintenance Department and are seeking a motivated and experienced Maintenance Engineer to help establish and shape the team. You’ll be responsible for supporting the smooth operation of our estate, maintaining schedules, managing reactive work, and ensuring compliance and safety across both sites.

This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a team that plays a vital role in ensuring the buildings remain functional, safe, and conducive to learning.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

General Maintenance:

  • Undertake or oversee internal repairs and planned maintenance
  • Support and monitor compliance contractors and external tradespeople
  • Use the Freshdesk system for scheduling and logging maintenance requests
  • Ensure all work is delivered to a high standard in compliance with regulations
  • Assist with project delivery and building upgrades

Facilities Support:

  • Help develop and implement maintenance and compliance procedures
  • Work closely with the Estates Manager and building users
  • Monitor cleanliness, safety, and the environmental impact of activities
  • Record and maintain documentation using the Hansom record system

Building Management

  • Assist in managing HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and security systems
  • Conduct safety inspections and risk assessments
  • Coordinate work with external contractors and monitor performance
  • Ensure effective operation of premises through policies and procedures

Health & Safety

  • Ensure compliance with current legislation and safety protocols
  • Maintain accurate reporting and documentation
  • Stay informed of changes in compliance requirements

General Responsibilities

  • Fulfil reasonable management requests, including room setups and portering
  • Support the welfare and safeguarding of students

Person Specification

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Experience in HVAC/mechanical/electrical maintenance (hotel or commercial preferred)
  • Skills in plumbing, painting, or general repair work advantageous
  • Knowledge of compliance regulations and building systems
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and facility management software
  • Strong problem-solving and multitasking abilities
  • Professional, proactive attitude and clear communication skills

Additional Requirements:

  • Availability to work one weekend per month
