Nanjing University – School of Life Sciences

School Introduction

The School of Life Sciences of Nanjing University originated from the Agricultural Science Department of Jinling University established in 1914 and the Biology Department of Nanjing Higher Normal School (National Southeast University) founded by Mr. Bingzhi in 1921. It is the first biology department in a university in my country and one of the oldest life science research and teaching institutions in the country.

The college consists of five departments: Biology, Biochemistry, Ecology, Biotechnology and Pharmacy, and Physiology and Artificial Intelligence Biology. It has several national talent training platforms, including the National Basic Science Research and Teaching Talent Training Base for Biology, the National Life Science and Technology Talent Training Base, and the National Life Science Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center; two national scientific research platforms, the National Key Laboratory of Pharmaceutical Biotechnology and the National Genetic Engineering Mouse Resource Bank, as well as the Ministry of Education Key Laboratory of Model Animal and Disease Research, the Ministry of Education Engineering Research Center for Protein and Peptide New Drugs, the Jiangsu Province Small RNA Engineering Technology Research Center, and the Nanjing University Institute of Biotechnology approved by the Ministry of Education.

The college has a highly qualified faculty, including 73 professors (researchers), 34 associate professors, 13 national leading talents, 20 national young talents, 1 innovative research group of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and 2 innovative teams of the Ministry of Education's Yangtze River Scholars and Innovation Team Development Program.

In terms of discipline construction, the college covers three first-level disciplines: biology, ecology, and pharmacy. It is currently ranked in the top 1% in the world (ESI discipline ranking) in 8.5 disciplines, including molecular biology and genetics, immunology, agricultural sciences, neuroscience and behavior, biology and biochemistry, pharmacology and toxicology, plant and animal sciences, and environment and ecology. Biology is a national first-level key discipline and has been selected as a national "double first-class" construction discipline.

In terms of scientific research, the college closely focuses on the core issues of life sciences, adheres to the interdisciplinary school-running policy, integrates research fields from micro-molecules to macro-ecology, from life health to environmental resources, and strives to build a high-level biomedical science and innovation system for life and health. Adhere to problem-oriented, strive to achieve "0 to 1" scientific research breakthroughs, and initially build three original discovery theory systems for the laws of natural selection of plant evolution and mutation, extracellular RNA and biosynthesis. A series of original technologies have been successfully transformed in the fields of medicine and ecological governance. Since 2016, it has won 1 second prize in the National Natural Science Award and 1 second prize in the National Science and Technology Progress Award (jointly applied with the School of Environment); 3 first prizes in the Natural Science Award of the Ministry of Education's Outstanding Scientific Research Achievements Award for Colleges and Universities, and 3 first prizes in the Technical Invention Award of the Ministry of Education's Outstanding Scientific Research Achievements Award for Colleges and Universities; 1 first prize in the Jiangsu Science and Technology Award, and 1 second prize in the Jiangsu Education Teaching and Research Achievement Award (Natural Science Research Category of Colleges and Universities).

In terms of international exchanges, the college has established closer cooperative relations with many universities and research institutions in the United States, the United Kingdom, Sweden, Australia, Canada, Japan, South Korea and other countries.
