The Parasite Biology Lab, led by Dr Gabriel Rinaldi at the Department of Biology is interested in the fundamental biology of parasitic worms that affect over 1 billion people worldwide. Both experimental and computational approaches are employed to shine light into key biological processes during the life of parasitic flatworms. Large-scale sequencing datasets (‘omics’) are generated and analyzed to reveal cells, genes, proteins and pathways underlying the infection process, parasite development and interaction with the hosts. These findings are further validated by in situ localization of gene products (e.g. transcripts and proteins) and imaging analysis. The roles of relevant parasite genes and pathways are investigated using gene expression perturbation approaches, such as RNA interference and phenotyping. We are seeking for an enthusiastic Post Doctoral Research Assistant (PDRA) with strong experience in bioinformatic analyses to join our team and lead the analyses of bulk and single cell ‘omic’, multidimensional datasets. These data are part of a research project aiming to decipher the molecular basis of the sexual dimorphism establishment in schistosomes. In particular, the PDRA will focus on the transition between the free-living mammalian infective larva stage (cercaria) of Schistosoma mansoni and the first intra-mammalian developmental stage (the schistosomula), in both male and females.
