Salary: Full time starting salary is normally in the range £46,735 to £55,755, with potential progression once in post to £62,728.

Contract Type: 2 years Fixed Term Contract

This full-time, two year, fixed-term Assistant Professorship post is available from 1 September 2025, based in Department of Classics, Ancient History and Archaeology, with specialism in Roman archaeology.

You will:

  • Possess sufficient breadth or depth of specialist and core knowledge in the discipline, normally, a higher degree relevant to the research/teaching area (usually PhD) or equivalent qualifications in Roman archaeology
  • Have extensive research/teaching experience and scholarship within subject specialism of Roman Archaeology, including the archaeology of Roman Western Europe
  • Possess proven ability to devise, advise on and manage learning/research
  • Have skills in managing, motivating and mentoring others successfully at all levels
  • Possess sufficient experience in field archaeology to contribute to the University’s undergraduate training excavation
  • Use a range of delivery techniques to enthuse and engage students
  • Participate in and develop external networks, for example, to contribute to student recruitment and outreach work
  • Deliver excellent teaching (identified by e.g. peer review) and make an impact at discipline programme level beyond your own teaching
  • Be expected to work towards Fellow of the HEA status and to attend formal CPD relating to this

You will join the Department of Classics, Ancient History and Archaeology at Birmingham, which is one of the few university departments in the UK that draws together Archaeology and the study of Greece, Rome and Egypt.
