Novel immunotherapies to target senescence-associated diseases
Salary: £41,344 plus London allowances £5,385 per annum*
Fixed term (18 months)
About us
An 18-month postdoctoral position is available at the MRC Laboratory of Medical Sciences (LMS) to work in the Senescence group headed by Prof Jesus Gil. The MRC LMS is a biomedical research institute where scientists and clinicians collaborate to advance the understanding of biology and its application to medicine. LMS is one of three directly funded MRC research institutes and enjoys close links with our partners at Imperial College London and the Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust.
Our lab has contributed to understanding the role of senescence as a tumour suppressor mechanism (Collado et al. Nature 2005), in limiting iPSC reprogramming (Banito et al. Genes Dev 2009) or activating immune surveillance (Kang et al. Nature 2011). We have also identified molecular mechanisms controlling senescence (Gil et al. Nat Cell Biol 2004; Tordella et al. Genes Dev 2016), the inflammatory phenotype associated with senescence (Acosta et al. Cell 2008; Acosta et al. Nat Cell Biol 2013; Herranz et al. Nat Cell Biol 2015; Georgilis et al. Cancer Cell 2018) ,how to target senescent cells (Guerrero et al. Nat Metabolism 2019; Guerrero et al. Nat Aging 2022; McHugh et al. Nat Cell Biol 2023) and the relationship between senescence and immune cells (Haston et al. Cancer Cell 2023; Reen et al. Sci Adv 2025).
About you
The successful candidate will work on a project collaborating with MiNK Therapeutics and Agenus Bio to identify novel strategies to potentiate immune-mediated elimination of senescent cells. You should be highly motivated, committed and have clear career goals. Experience with animal work, immunology and studying immune-mediated elimination of tumours is essential. Working with viral vectors, functional screenings, and 3D cultures is desirable. All applicants should have a PhD degree in life sciences or equivalent experience, and at least one first-author primary publication published. Availability to start working as soon as possible is essential. A Home Office Personal License is desirable.
What we offer
As well as the exciting opportunities this role presents, we also offer defined benefit pension scheme and excellent holiday entitlement (30 days plus 2.5 privilege days & 8 bank holidays), family friendly policies (6 months full pay maternity & adoption leave), a range of shopping/travel discounts, access to our Employee Assistant Programme Scheme, Health and Wellbeing Support and a salary sacrifice cycle to work scheme: Benefits
