About the role:
The National Biomarker Centre (NBC) aims to enhance clinical trials of new anticancer drugs through translational research. Pre-clinical studies are essential to determine cellular responses to novel agents and to define molecular mechanisms and biomarkers prior to translation into the clinic.
We are seeking to appoint a Scientific Officer within the NBC with a keen interest in the development of novel therapies and associated biomarkers to improve cancer patient outcomes. This role affords an exciting opportunity to be part of a team that utilises ex vivo and in vitro cell-based assays to determine the efficacy and mechanism of action of novel therapeutics with parallel development of biomarkers to optimise their application in the clinic. This post predominantly utilises Small Cell Lung Cancer (SCLC) models, a cancer of unmet clinical need, with opportunities to extend studies into other cancer preclinical models, when required by NBC. These innovative treatment approaches will be in partnership with both internal and external collaborators.
About you:
You should be educated to degree level in a bioscience subject or have equivalent relevant experience. Although training in specialist techniques will be given to acquire the necessary skills, you will have experience in a range of molecular biological techniques, in tissue culture, and in biomarker assay development and validation. You will have relevant experience in working in a Life Science Laboratory. Key qualities include independent thinking, ability to work in a team and good communication skills, all of which are needed to efficiently work in a multidisciplinary team.
Why choose Cancer Research UK National Biomarker Centre?
The Cancer Research UK National Biomarker Centre (https://cruknbc.org/) is a leading and highly specialised translational research centre within The University of Manchester (www.manchester.ac.uk), aligned with the Cancer Research UK Manchester Institute (www.cruk.manchester.ac.uk), and core-funded by Cancer Research UK (www.cancerresearchuk.org), the largest independent cancer research organisation in the world. In spring 2023 the Institute moved into the state-of-the-art Paterson Building, a £150 million flagship purpose-built biomedical research centre directly attached to The Christie NHS Foundation Trust in South Manchester (www.christie.nhs.uk), one of the largest cancer treatment centres in Europe. These factors combine to provide an exceptional environment in which to pursue basic, translational and clinical research programmes.
