Description of Post

The University seeks applications from candidates for the post of Facilities manager to join the Buildings and Estates team.  The appointee will have responsibility for the Sustainability, Buildings and Operations on the Galway and Mayo campuses and will also have responsibility for some university-wide initiatives and activities contributing to university-wide strategies.

This position presents an exciting opportunity for an effective, proactive individual, with substantive experience in Building and Estate management to make a significant contribution to the university plans

While this position is based on the Dublin Road campus in Galway city, is envisaged that the post holder will be required to provide services across the five Galway Mayo campuses, including travel between campuses to carry out duties. The post holder may also from time to time carry out duties in any of the University’s campuses, as required.  The post-holder will liaise with and work collaboratively with university-wide Buildings and Estates teams and participate in cross-University working groups and initiatives.

Please note: The postholder will be based at the ATU Galway Mayo, Galway City Campus.

Essential Qualifications

Minimum

  • A minimum NFQ Level 8 qualification in a relevant discipline such as Architecture, Quantity Surveying, Engineering, Construction Project Management, Building Surveying, etc.,
  • Senior level experience in design/construction/management or operation of complex buildings.
  • Experience of service management and delivery in a university campus or similar environment.
  • Project management experience.
  • Experience of managing and controlling budgets.
  • Experience of the management of business-essential building services and installations and associated emergency and contingency management provisions.
  • Experience of managing direct staff and contractors in the delivery of a range of services.
  • Strong analytical and decision-making skills.
  • ICT competence.
  • A strong track record in and capability for:
  • Leadership, team building and team participation.
  • Customer service.
  • Negotiating and influencing skills.
  • Communication and interpersonal skills.

Desirable

  • A postgraduate management or other relevant postgraduate qualification.
  • Valid membership of a relevant recognised professional institution.
  • Knowledge of Climate Action Roadmap and experience in managing sustainability projects.
  • IT skills relevant to the requirements of the post, ideally including MS Word, MS Project, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, Revit or AutoCAD.
  • Practical experience, a strong customer service perspective and a thorough understanding of buildings and building services.
  • An understanding of the public works appraisal, procurement and management frameworks, including the Capital Works Management Framework, the Public Spending Code, and EU Public Procurement requirements.
  • Knowledge of workplace health and safety legislation including the Safety, Health & Welfare at Work (Construction) Regulations, Building Control Amendment Regulations (BCAR), and Building Regulations.
  • Capacity to anticipate and resolve potential problems and to develop innovative/creative solutions to multi-faceted problems.
