The Philosophy Department at Southampton has an excellent reputation for teaching and research, across a wide range of the subject. We were ranked 6th in REF2021 by overall GPA and 1st equal for impact beyond the academy. We are based within the School of Humanities in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities and have close interdisciplinary links with other members of the School and the wider University. The University of Southampton is a top 100 global university (QS World Rankings, 2025) and one of the UK’s top 15 universities (Times Higher, 2025).
The role
We seek to appoint a Lecturer in Philosophy, with research interests including one or more of the following areas: philosophy of mind, metaphysics, philosophy of language. The position is available from September 2025, on a permanent basis.
About you
The successful candidate will have a record of high-quality published research in Philosophy, commensurate with career stage. They will be enthusiastic and flexible in contributing to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, and will be keen to participate fully in the academic activities of a lively and committed department which prizes collegiality very highly. An ability to contribute to teaching in one of more of the following areas is desirable but not essential: aesthetics, Kant, non-western philosophy, philosophy of religion, post-Kantian philosophy.
