At the Department of Physiology Anatomy & Genetics (DPAG), we conduct discovery science to reassemble physiological processes at various levels, bridging translational medicine and interfacing between physical and life sciences. Overview of the Role:
The Boyman Group seeks a motivated Postdoctoral Research Scientist to pioneer research on mitochondria's role in heart disease, funded by the British Heart Foundation. This role involves exploring strategies to enhance mitochondrial energy supply in failing hearts. You will advance our understanding of mitochondrial energy regulation, utilizing state-of-the-art tools for imaging, metabolic assays, and molecular biology. The position offers a collaborative environment at DPAG, Oxford University, working with experts in mitochondrial metabolism and engaging with postdoctoral scientists, PhD candidates, and research staff. Experience with laboratory animal handling is essential.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage academic research and administrative activities.
  • Develop new scientific techniques and experimental protocols.
  • Test hypotheses and analyse scientific data.
  • Contribute ideas for new research projects and income generation.
  • Collaborate on scientific reports and journal articles.
  • Use specialist scientific equipment.
  • Advise group members on scientific protocols.
  • Work with lab animals, tissues, and cells.
  • Represent the research group at external meetings/seminars.
  • Collaborate on projects with partner institutions.

Selection Criteria:
Essential:

  • PhD/DPhil in a relevant field (e.g., Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Physiology, Biophysics, Cardiology).
  • Specialist knowledge in the discipline.
  • Ability to manage academic research and activities.
  • Experience contributing to publications/presentations.
  • Ability to generate research ideas and income.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Experience with lab animals, tissues, and cells.

Desirable:

  • Experience managing a discrete area of a research project.
  • Collaboration in developing research articles.
  • Background in cell or molecular biology techniques.
  • Interest in mitochondrial research, heart disease, or related fields.
  • Proficiency in core laboratory techniques.
