Full time open-ended contract subject to funding, with minimum commitment of 24 months

The International Growth Centre (IGC) works with policymakers in developing countries to promote inclusive and sustainable growth through pathbreaking research. We are a global research centre with a network of world-leading researchers, country teams across Africa, South Asia, and the Middle East, and a set of global policy initiatives. Based at London School of Economics (LSE) and in partnership with the University of Oxford, we are majority funded by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) with support from other global funders. We focus on four themes: state effectiveness; firms, trade, and productivity; cities; and energy and environment.

The IGC has recently launched a Climate and Growth Initiative (CGI) with funding from LSE’s new Global School of Sustainability. The IGC Policy Economist (Climate, Energy, and Environment) will help expand IGC activities under this initiative globally, covering all aspects related to sustainable growth, from climate adaptation & resilience to the green transition to the conservation of natural capital.

Key responsibilities include generating research projects, conducting policy analyses, engaging with high-level partner governments, and supporting fundraising.

The essential skills we are looking for include:

  1. a demonstrated understanding and experience of economic research and policy issues relating to sustainable growth;
  2. a proven track record of working with policymakers on climate, energy, and environment issues in low & middle-income countries (LMICs);
  3. a Master’s degree in economics, public policy, or related technical disciplines by date of application;
  4. demonstrated ability to construct clear and concise arguments which translate research into policy recommendations with excellent written and oral communication skills;
  5. experience in using statistical programmes for data analysis, including GIS;
  6. the willingness to regularly travel to Africa, Asia and Middle East, and engage with country teams and stakeholders in these regions;
  7. a proven track record of working independently and taking initiative 

The role is based at the IGC Head Office within LSE.  We offer an occupational pension scheme, generous annual leave and excellent training and development opportunities. For this post, we may be able to offer visa sponsorship to the successful candidate.
