Applications are invited for the post of a Departmental Lecturer in Materials Modelling, with effect from 1st September 2025 or soon thereafter.
The Department of Materials at Oxford University is a world leader bringing a highly interdisciplinary approach to the development of materials with a particular focus on materials for a sustainable future across a range of materials systems and technologies including energy storage and conversion materials. The work of the department is underpinned by excellence in the, theory and modelling of materials, microstructural and nanoscale characterisation of materials, and the processing a production of materials.
This post has been created to primarily to fulfil a teaching and departmental support need, while also having the opportunity to contribute to original research in the area of mathematical and computational modelling of materials in the Department of Materials. The post-holder will be expected to lead a research activity within the general area of materials modelling, collaborating internally and externally with others as appropriate.
The post-holder will also provide small group (usually groups of 2-3) tutorial teaching primarily to Corpus Christi students. You will be expected to teach across a range of materials science topics and in particular those that are closer to the physics end of the Materials Science spectrum. On the department side, the post provides an opportunity to contribute to and to gain experience with undergraduate and post-graduate teaching in Materials Science, and the development of teaching programmes and administration. Undergraduate teaching will include lecture courses and practical classes, including contributing to the development of new courses. You will also co-supervise final year undergraduate research projects and post-graduate research projects.
The post-holder will also act as the Materials lead for the Astrophoria Foundation year, which is a one-year foundation programme for UK state school students. It is aimed at those with significant academic potential, who have experienced severe personal disadvantage or disrupted education which has resulted in them being unable to apply directly for an Oxford undergraduate degree programme.
The successful candidate will have a doctorate in materials science or a closely related subject, will have a track record of research, including publications, in materials modelling, and will demonstrate the ability to delivery undergraduate teaching.
Queries about the post should be addressed to the Head of Department, Professor Pete Nellist, at head.department@materials.ox.ac.uk.
All applications are to be made online using the Oxford University E-Recruitment system, no later than 12 noon on Friday, 13 June 2025. You will be required to upload a supporting statement and CV as part of your application. Please do not attach any manuscripts, papers, transcripts, mark sheets or certificates as these will not be considered as part of your application.
Interviews are scheduled to take place at the Department of Materials on the week commencing around July, and you must be available during this time in person.
