About us

The Department of Neuromuscular Diseases is a hub for clinical and research excellence across the spectrum of spinal cord and neuromuscular diseases. Our group of world-leading clinical, genetic and basic science researchers focus their work on understanding the causes and biological mechanisms leading to Neuromuscular Disease and translating this knowledge into developing novel therapeutic solutions that is of direct benefit to neurological disorders such as motor neurone disease, Alzheimer’s disease, and neuromuscular disease.

About the role

We are seeking a proactive and skilled researcher to support a clinical study focused on balance issues in adults with Mitochondrial disease. Based at the Centre for Neuromuscular Diseases, this role involves recruiting participants, conducting in-home or clinic-based assessments, and collecting data using wearable sensors.

Research visits will include setting up the sensor and app, troubleshooting with support from the study team, and administering functional balance assessments and patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs). Ethical approvals will be in place, and you will also contribute to manuscript writing, research presentations, and proposal development. This is an exciting opportunity to join a collaborative team delivering impactful, patient-centred research.

The post is offered part-time at 14.6 hours per week (0.40 Full Time Equivalent). This role is eligible for hybrid working with a minimum of 20% of time on site and will require travel to different locations in the UK.

An Honorary contract will be sought from UCLH NHS Foundation Trust, for which a DBS check will be required.

The post is available from 01 September 2025 and funded by The Lily Foundation until 28 February 2026 in the first instance.

About you

You will hold a PhD (or equivalent level qualification) and a UK-recognised degree in Physiotherapy, along with current registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). Experience in administering functional outcome measures is essential, as is experience with - or a strong understanding of - the NHS and/or working in community-based healthcare settings.

What we offer

Starting salary offered in the range £17,792.00 - £18,248.80 (i.e.,40% of £44,480 - £45,622) per annum including London Allowance.

Appointment at Grade 7 is dependent upon having been awarded a PhD; if this is not the case, initial appointment will be as Research Assistant (salary £15,442.80 - £16,502.00, i.e.,40% of £38,607 - £41,255 per annum) with appointment at Grade 7 being backdated to the date of final submission of the PhD thesis.
