The School of Computer Science and Electronic Engineering is a large and vibrant department in the Faculty of Science and Health. Duties of the Role
The postdoctoral research will be integral to the EyeWarn project, the largest-scale study of its kind, aimed at detecting fatigue and cognitive strain across diverse sectors of UK society, with a particular focus on high-risk occupations. EyeWarn is a three-year initiative led by The University of Essex in collaboration with Solvemed Inc., the University of Oxford and Stanford University. This groundbreaking project leverages advances signal analytics, AI and biostatistics7 to provide transformative insights into fatigue monitoring and its societal impact.
As a key member of the EyeWarn team, you will apply cutting-edge and custom-designed computer vision and deep learning models to analyse vast video datasets, focusing on extracting robust markers of fatigue and cognitive strain. Responsibilities include performing advanced signal processing on time-series data, analysing pupillometry and eye movement metrics, and optimizing measurement techniques to improve the detection and assessment of fatigue markers.
Working closely with Solvemed’s multidisciplinary R&D team and leading scientists from Oxford and Stanford, contributing to the development of scientific research, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of fatigue detection and cognitive health monitoring at a societal scale.

Skills and qualifications required
You should hold a PhD in Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, Data Science, Statistics, Bioengineering, or a related field and possess strong analytical skills, a solid grasp of time-series analysis of bio-signals, and expertise in Neuroscience biostatistics. They will also have a demonstrated ability to develop and publish research articles in a leading capacity, and proficiency in Python programming and computational algorithms is highly desirable.
Additionally, you will possess a deep understanding of time-series data processing and analysis, as well as experience in human Neuroscience, with a focus on electrophysiology and/or eye-tracking. We also expect a strong mathematical foundation and proficiency in advanced analytical methods and technologies.
Strong written and verbal communication skills are also essential for the post.
