Are you passionate about teaching and advanced cell biology? Birkbeck, University of London is seeking an Associate Lecturer to join the School of Natural Sciences and teach part-time this coming Autumn 2025. 

As Associate Lecturer you would teach the module:

  • Advanced Cell Biology - level 4
  • 12 teaching hours
  • Teaching six hours per week on Tuesday 1-4pm and 6-9pm. 

As Associate Lecturer, you'll contribute to teaching on the third year of our BSc Biomedicine programme, giving a series of lectures on selected topics relating to advanced cell biology to students from a variety of backgrounds but who will mainly be in their third year of their undergraduate studies.

You will have a strong commitment to undergraduate teaching within the biological sciences and to providing support to students that fosters academic growth.

This opportunity covers teaching only in the Autumn term (October-December). You will deliver four Tuesday afternoon and evening sessions (8 in total). The work would require 24 contact hours of teaching as well as organisation, communication with students, student support, and assessment marking.

The module syllabus has been designed and the teaching materials already exist although you will have some freedom to refine these and to contribute to the design of the assessments, subject to the specifications in place.

To succeed as Associate Lecturer, you will have:

  • A degree in biological sciences and/or similar equivalent qualification.
  • Relevant teaching experience, working with adult students within the HE sector. 
  • A good understanding of the needs of a wide range of learners and be able to relate well to their individual needs and engage their interest and enthusiasm.  
  • Experience of (or willingness to develop) a wide range of teaching and assessment methods.   
  • Demonstrably effective communication, interpersonal and presentation skills across a range of relevant contexts. 
  • A working knowledge of IT including Word, Excel, e-mail and experience of (or willingness to use) Moodle.

Salary:

Payment is based on an hourly rate depending on length of continuous service with the College (starting rate £68.13 per hour inclusive of pro-rata London Allowance and holiday pay) for contact hours worked. This hourly rate is based on the starting point of Grade 7 and is inclusive of a ‘Duties Related to Teaching Multiplier’ at 2.5, which covers preparation, teaching, administration, assessment marking and other examining duties in connection with the course.
