Applications are invited for the post of Postdoctoral Research Associate in applied algebraic geometry/computational commutative algebra/algebraic statistics in the School of Mathematics at the University of Edinburgh. The post is available from 1st September for a 36 months fixed-term, full-time contract with a potential 6 month extension.
The position is funded through the Royal Society Dorothy Hodgkin Fellowship project “Pure Mathematics for Statistical inference,” of Dimitra Kosta. This project will further develop connections between algebra, geometry and statistics in the directions of singular learning theory, phylogenetic algebraic geometry and algebraic combinatorics (in particular concerning unimodular toric ideals, toric fibre products and Markov bases).
To maximise innovation and creativity in mathematics, applications from candidates with diverse career paths, including those returning from a career break or following time in other roles, are encouraged.
The Opportunity:
The Hodge Institute currently includes Milena Hering, Ana Rita Pires and Agata Smoktunowicz, while the Statistics group includes Natalia Bochkina, Sara Wade and Ruth King, working in areas related to the project, as well as a wealth of postdoctoral researchers and PhD students. In addition to working in collaboration with the grant-holder (Dimitra Kosta), the successful candidate will be encouraged to develop and pursue their own approaches to research.
Applicants should have/or be close to obtaining a PhD in algebra, geometry or statistics, have an interest in applied algebraic geometry/computational commutative algebra/algebraic statistics and a track record of research excellence. Please upload a CV and a brief research statement (no more than 3 pages) when applying for the post via the online recruitment system.
In addition, please arrange for at least two letters of reference (one from your most recent employer) to be sent to references@maths.ed.ac.uk quoting Ref number 12539.
