The School of Natural and Built Environment at Queen’s University Belfast is seeking to hire a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to work on the ThermoCal project (THERMOphysical properties of CALedonian rock materials to de-risk geothermal development), a collaboration between the University of Glasgow, Queen’s University Belfast, the Norwegian University of Science and Technology and the Norwegian Geological Survey as well as a number of other research and industry partners. This project is supported by the UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council [grant number P/U536878/1].

The Research Fellow will undertake research tasks during the project with the support of the project’s coinvestigators based at Queen’s University Belfast and the network of project partners. The post is fixed-term for 24 months, starting 1st September 2025 (or as soon as possible thereafter). A key component of the post is to evaluate the use of airborne geophysical data (radiometrics) as well as geophysical borehole logging data for the determination of thermal properties of Caledonian rocks in the project area.

About the person:

Successful candidates need to:

  • Hold a PhD in Geology, Geophysics, Engineering or a related discipline with a strong background in the useand analysis of airborne geophysical data, in particular radiometric data.
  • Demonstrable track record of research in the interpretation of airborne geophysical data with a publicationrecord in peer reviewed journals commensurate with stage of career.
  • Demonstrate experience in analysis of airborne geophysical data, in particular for the evaluation of thermalrock properties.
  • Demonstrate the ability to devise, advise on and manage key sections in major projects.
  • Demonstrate sufficient breadth and depth of specialist knowledge in the discipline and of research methods andtechniques to work within established research programmes.
  • Show a proven ability to communicate complex information clearly and ability to work within amultidisciplinary team.

This post is available for 24 months. Fixed term contract posts are available for the stated period in the first instance but in particular circumstances may be renewed or made permanent subject to availability of funding.
