Lab Engineer in Architecture and Interior Design

De Montfort University Dubai – Faculty of Art, Design and Humanities

De Montfort University Dubai is seeking a technically skilled and highly organized Lab Engineer to support the Architecture and Interior Design programmes within the Faculty of Art, Design and Humanities. This non-teaching role plays a critical part in enhancing student learning by providing technical expertise, ensuring the safe use of specialist tools and equipment, and maintaining an innovative and creative studio and lab environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide hands-on support for equipment and digital tools used in architectural and interior design, including laser cutters, 3D printers, and multimedia equipment.
  • Assist students with model-making, presentation preparation, and material exploration.
  • Manage and maintain the studio materials library, physical sample inventory, and multimedia labs.
  • Offer software support across tools such as AutoCAD, Rhino, SketchUp, Revit, Adobe Creative Suite, and related platforms.
  • Prepare teaching spaces and labs for day-to-day academic use.
  • Conduct inductions, technical demonstrations, and safety briefings.
  • Maintain accurate logs for safety checks, equipment usage, and inventory.
  • Provide support for open days, exhibitions, and community outreach events.
  • Liaise closely with academic staff to support the delivery of technical workshops.
  • Promote an inclusive and respectful working environment, aligned with DMU’s values and UAE labour standards.

Candidate Requirements:

Qualifications:

  • BA/BSc in Architecture, Interior Design, Product Design, or a related technical discipline (Required)
  • Certified training in the use of design equipment and software (Desirable) Experience:
  • Ideally minimum of 2–3 years of relevant experience working in design studios, model-making labs, or technical environments (Required)
  • Experience working with 3D printers, laser cutters, or AR/VR tools (Desirable)
  • Previous experience supporting academic or student-focused environments (Desirable)

Skills & Attributes:

  • Strong technical proficiency in architectural/interior design software including AutoCAD, Revit, Rhino, SketchUp, and Adobe Creative Suite (Required)
  • Ability to ensure safe, effective, and creative use of tools and materials (Required)
  • Strong organisational and time management skills (Required)
  • Effective communication and teamwork abilities (Required)
  • Experience of presenting information in an engaging and structured manner (Required)
  • Familiarity with digital fabrication and multimedia tools (Desirable)
  • Experience in a higher education environment (Desirable)
  • Awareness of health and safety regulations for studio and lab settings (Desirable)
  • Willingness to support student recruitment and university-wide events (Desirable)
