Resources and Staffing Manager

Imperial College London – Department of Bioengineering

About the role

The Department of Bioengineering at Imperial College London has the exciting opportunity to appoint a Resources & Staffing Manager to lead the core people strategy and management function of the department. This senior role combines technical skills in financial and personnel management with leadership of a dedicated team to deliver excellent support to the Department.

Responsible for all personnel processes within the department, the Resources & Staffing Manager supports our 60+ line managers and 280+ staff in their everyday activities. Overseeing the entire employee journey from recruitment to resignation, you are integral to the smooth running of development, wellbeing and pay & progression processes. Liaising with Imperial HR teams, you will establish yourself as a conduit between the needs of the department and University policies and procedures. You will be key in ensuring financial management of staffing budgets on research projects and recurrent accounts; acting as the approver for salary commitments and contract changes.

You will take a lead in supporting the EDCC chair through the collation, maintenance and analysis of key staffing information, as well as developing and supporting the implementation of action plans.

The post holder will also be integral to supporting the strategic research decisions of the Department, taking leading roles in the coordination and delivery of strategic projects aimed at improving various aspects of the Department’s performance and processes.

What you would be doing

You will be a key member of the Department’s Professional Services management team, responsible for ensuring processes and policies are efficient and transparent. This will include:

  • Strategic oversight of all personnel processes including recruitment, contract changes, pay review, promotions and leavers processes.
  • Line management of the Resources Administration team, who provide operational support on daily activities in the employee lifecycle, including purchasing activities.
  • Supporting the Director of Operations in developing key strategic initiatives and designing efficient systems and processes to manage department resources.
  • Active membership of the Department EDI Committee, embedding best practice in all department policies and processes, ensuring the staff cohort is able to attend activities and be integral to community building initiatives.

This is a busy and dynamic role that plays an essential part in the Department’s success and would suit those with a good eye for detail, strong focus on process improvement, ability to juggle a fast-paced workload and those who enjoy interacting with a wide variety of colleagues.

What we are looking for

  • Previous experience in the higher education sector with an excellent understanding of the challenges facing Universities in relation to staffing and research funding.
  • Financial acumen – strong budget planning and management skills, proven ability to understand, analyse, interpret and communicate financial information
  • Outstanding people management skills, with the ability to lead and develop a team with diverse responsibilities, whilst also possessing a high degree of tact and confidentiality.
  • Excellent communicator – highly developed interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills. Tactful, diplomatic, and able to influence and engage with people at all levels
  • Excellent time-management and organisational skills: confident working on multiple projects and work streams simultaneously
  • Educated to degree level or equivalent, or equivalent experience in similar or related roles
  • A willingness to be onsite working across two campuses to effectively lead a customer focused service

What we can offer you

  • The opportunity to be part of a Departmental management team, with strategic responsibility.
  • A varied and exciting workload, with visibility in central teams and the opportunity to engage in and influence change at both a departmental and institutional level.
  • The opportunity to continue your career at a world-leading institution and be part of our mission to conduct science for humanity
  • Benefit from sector-leading salary and remuneration package (including 39 days off a year and generous pension schemes)
  • Get access to a range of workplace benefits including a flexible working policy from day 1, generous family leave packages, on-site leisure facilities and a cycle-to-work scheme
  • Interest-free season ticket loan schemes for travel
  • Be part of a diverse, inclusive, and collaborative work culture with various staff networks and resources designed to support your personal and professional wellbeing.
