We are seeking a highly motivated and creative Post-doctoral Research Fellow/Associate to contribute to a cutting-edge research project, led by Dr. Mike Smith, focused on advancing the understanding of crystallization and glassy dynamics. In collaboration with theorists Prof. Juan Garrahan (UoN) and Prof. Kranthi Mandadapu (UC Berkeley, USA), the project will build on previous work [J.G. Downs et al PRL 127, 268002 (2021)]. We will use innovative experimental techniques employing particle tracking of model 2D vibrated particles to test fundamental theoretical concepts in statistical physics.
The successful candidate will be responsible for the design, development, and execution of experiments, as well as data analysis and interpretation. This will involve using and adapting existing software, and developing new code for experiment control, data acquisition, and data analysis. They will be expected to work effectively with Dr. Smith, collaborators, other group members and contribute to the dissemination of research findings through publications and presentations at conferences.
This position offers an exciting opportunity for a skilled and enthusiastic researcher to work alongside leading experts in the field of statistical physics and to make significant contributions to this area of research. The post is offered on a fixed term contract for up to three years, with a flexible start date, but preferably on 01 September 2025.
As part of our commitment to improving equality, diversity and inclusion within the school, shortlisted candidates will be given the opportunity to talk to a member of staff representing women, racially minoritized people, LGBTQIA+ or disabilities communities. This will be separate to the assessment process and will play no role in the decision to appoint.
Informal enquiries may be addressed to Mike Smith, email mike.i.smith@nottingham.ac.uk Please note that applications sent directly to this email address will not be accepted.
