Birkbeck, University of London, has an exciting opportunity for an Associate Lecturer to join our teaching team in the School of Creative Arts, Culture and Communication

We are looking for an Associate Lecturer to convene and teach our module, Working with Found Footage, starting this Autumn 2025 on a part time contract. 

As part of our programmes, you would teach the module:

  • Working with Found Footage (UG, level 6)
  • 30 hours
  • Tuesdays, 6-9pm, Autumn term

As Associate Lecturer, you will include convening the module, running workshops and seminars, offering one-to-one tutorials, module administration and assessment.

To succeed as Associate Lecturer, you will have knowledge of the history of found footage as a distinct mode of film-making and artistic practice.

Building on Birkbeck’s radical reputation in film and screen media, this module offers an introduction to working with found footage and the creative reuse of archive film. The course allows students to critically engage with archives at both a historical and institutional level, and investigates the opportunities and challenges afforded to us through archive.

You will also have experience of teaching in higher education and be qualified to the corresponding level of the award as required to teach, or demonstrate equivalent professional/industry level experience.

In addition to the criteria specified in the job pack, the minimum requirements for selection are:

  1. A Postgraduate degree in Film and Screen Media/or in relevant subject area
  2. Demonstrable knowledge of the history of found footage as a distinct mode of film-making and artistic practice   
  3. A good understanding of the needs of full and part-time adult learners and be able to relate well to their individual needs and engage their interest and enthusiasm
  4. A working knowledge of IT including Word, Excel, e-mail and experience of (or willingness to use) Moodle & Teams.

Remuneration:

Payment is based on an hourly rate depending on length of continuous service with the College (starting rate £68.13 per hour inclusive of pro-rata London Allowance and holiday pay) for contact hours worked. This hourly rate is based on the starting point of Grade 7 and is inclusive of a ‘Duties Related to Teaching Multiplier’ at 2.5, which covers preparation, teaching, administration, assessment marking and other examining duties in connection with the course.

Contract:
