Are you a keen teacher of counselling and psychology? Birkbeck, University of London, is looking for a part-time Associate Lecturer to join the School of Psychological Sciences and help shape our future going forwards.

Your main responsibility will be preparation, teaching, administration and assessment of the Clinical and Counselling Psychology module, which is a Level 6 optional module on our BPS-accredited BSc Psychology programme.

As Associate Lecturer you would teach the module:

As Associate Lecturer, your role will be to deliver teaching to Birkbeck students, in order to enable them to complete their studies successfully, and to undertake all related course administrative duties.

The module covers topics such as approaches to mental suffering and models of therapy, ethical considerations around practitioner psychology, formulation, and diagnosis. It's for those who are interested in working with clinical populations as a practitioner psychologist such as a counselling or clinical psychologist. It honours the diverse working fields of practitioner psychologists.

The lectures take students through formulations, clinical theories and explore these through a range of lens such as humanistic, existential and cognitive modalities.

The module encourages students to critically and compassionately engage with accounts of suffering and approaches to therapeutic applications.

In addition to the criteria specified in the job pack, the minimum requirements for selection are: 

  • A degree in Psychology and/or similar equivalent qualification
  • Relevant teaching experience, working with adult students within the HE sector. 
  • A good understanding of the needs of a wide range of learners & be able to relate well to their individual needs and engage their interest and enthusiasm.  
  • Experience of (or willingness to develop) a wide range of teaching & assessment methods.   
  • Demonstrably effective communication, interpersonal and presentation skills across a range of relevant contexts. 
  • A working knowledge of IT including Word, Excel, e-mail & experience of (or willingness to use) Moodle.

Candidates will need to demonstrate competence or significant potential in all areas above.

The successful candidate will be required to teach all sessions on the module.

Salary

Payment is based on an hourly rate depending on length of continuous service with the College (starting rate £68.13 per hour inclusive of pro-rata London Allowance and holiday pay) for contact-hours worked.

This hourly rate is based on the starting point of Grade 7 and is inclusive of a ‘Duties Related to Teaching Multiplier’ at  2.5, which covers preparation, teaching, administration, assessment marking & other examining duties in connection with the course.  

Contract

Fixed-term contract: October - December 2025.
