Faculty of Medical Sciences
Qualifications and Experience
The successful candidate must possess at minimum:
- A Doctorate of Medicine (DM) or equivalent
OR
- A PhD in Medical Microbiology or closely related field
Candidates should also possess:
- Ideally at least five (5) years’ teaching experience, preferably in the area of Clinical or Medical Microbiology
- A good record of relevant research and publications in reputable, peer-reviewed journals
- A strong interest in academics and experience in diagnostic services of Clinical or Medical Microbiology e.g. Virology, Mycology, Parasitology or Bacteriology
Candidates with the following would have an advantage:
- Other specialist training (e.g. FRCPath, ABBM or ACCM)
- Professional qualifications in a relevant field
- Practical experience in Strategic Curriculum Development of both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in Microbiology
- Experience in teaching Microbiology at the undergraduate and postgraduate level
- Experience in supervising undergraduate and postgraduate students
The following would be considered assets:
- Medical qualification (e.g. MBBS or MBCHB)
- Certificate in university teaching and learning
- Familiarity with Problem-Based Learning system
- Experience in blended teaching and learning
- Proficiency in advanced diagnostic techniques, molecular methods and bioinformatics
- Proficiency in securing external research funding
Key Responsibilities
- Teaching of the specialty to undergraduate and postgraduate students
- Mentoring medical and postgraduate students in Microbiology, as well as supervising and assisting with postgraduate teaching
- Participating in all routine Departmental activities, which include meetings and representation in various Committees of the Faculty
- Delivering teaching in Microbiology in the medical curriculum
- Forging working relationships with societal stakeholders including industry and NGOs to design Microbiology and Research Projects
- Supporting University assessment and examination activities
- Assessing and re-evaluating the Biostatistics curriculum for continuous quality assurance
- Organizing and conducting module examinations
Personal Attributes
The Campus places high priority on individuals of integrity who can work well in a team and student friendly environment. Candidates should also possess good communication and interpersonal skills. A good command of both oral and written English is essential.
Candidates should also:
- Be able to work as a team member within the Microbiology Unit as well as the wider multidisciplinary Department
- Be creative and innovative in delivery of undergraduate and postgraduate curriculum to integrate theory and practice
- Be willing to forge working relationships with internal and external partners to develop impactful research projects
