Research Associate in Geometric Inference

Cardiff University - School of Mathematics

Location: Cardiff
Salary: £40,497 to £45,413 per annum (Grade 6)
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Fixed-Term/Contract
Placed On: 17th June 2025
Closes: 8th July 2025
Job Ref: 20218BR

We are looking for a Research Associate to join the Geometry, Algebra, Mathematical Physics and Topology group in the School of Mathematics.

In this role, you will:

  • will support a UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship research programme
  • conduct research within geometric inference or topological data analysis
  • develop research objectives and proposals for own or joint research

This research programme is focussed on the application of rigorous geometric methods to determine the statistical properties of methods in topological data analysis. You are likely to collaborate with the project leader, Dr John Harvey, and with graduate students to use tools from Riemannian geometry and statistics to make both theoretical and practical advances. However, if you believe you can contribute to this programme of research in other ways, you are very welcome to apply and should clearly articulate your motivation in a cover letter. You may also optionally submit a brief statement of research interests.

You will benefit from substantial support for your career development, as the Fellowship commits funds for your attendance at conferences, inviting short-term visitors, and developing your independent research interests. You will have the opportunity to set your own agenda within the scope of the project, especially in the development of applications.

We’d like to hear from you if you:

  • Hold a postgraduate degree at PhD level (or nearing completion / submission) in mathematics
  • Have an established expertise in geometric inference or topological data analysis
  • Have a proven ability to publish in national journals

We can offer you the chance to work in a vibrant organisation, with great benefits. We are a proud Living Wage supporter.

This role is eligible to be offered on a blended working basis, meaning that as well as spending time working on campus you may spend some time working from another location, e.g. your home. The University is committed to offering this flexibility, wherever the role and business need allows, supporting work-life balance.

Please contact John Harvey (HarveyJ13@cardiff.ac.uk) or Ana Ros Camacho (RosCamachoA@cardiff.ac.uk) for an informal, confidential discussion about the role.

This post is full-time, fixed-term for a period of twelve months, with an end date no later than 30 September 2026.

Salary: £40,497 - £45,413 per annum (Grade 6)

Closing date: Tuesday, 8 July 2025

Cardiff University is committed to supporting and promoting equality and diversity and to creating an inclusive working environment. We believe this can be achieved through attracting, developing, and retaining a diverse range of staff from many different backgrounds who have the ambition to create a University which seeks to fulfil our social, cultural and economic obligation to Cardiff, Wales, and the world.  In supporting our employees to achieve a balance between their work and their personal lives, we will also consider proposals for flexible working or job share arrangements.

Applications may be submitted in Welsh, and an application submitted in Welsh will not be treated less favourably than an application submitted in English.

Cardiff University is a signatory to the San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA), which means that in hiring and promotion decisions we will evaluate applicants on the quality of their research, not publication metrics or the identity of the journal in which the research is published.
