The Technical University of Denmark, National Institute of Aquatic Resources (DTU Aqua) invites applications for a professor position in biology and ecology of marine fishes – from molecules to the functioning of entire organisms.

As our professor in fish biology, you will develop the strategic Fish Biology Research Area of DTU Aqua and coordinate activities of the research group substantiating individual-based knowledge about fish life history strategies, phenotypic plasticity and adaptation through field studies, experiments and laboratory analyses. Your research leadership will stimulate generation of new biological knowledge and process understanding, which feed fundamental information into sustainable fisheries management, aquaculture innovation, fish welfare and conservation.

Responsibilities and qualifications

Your overall focus will be to strengthen the departments competences within the core disciplines of the research area involving ecophysiology, bioenergetics, molecular ontogeny and morpho-physiology with special emphasis on impacts of climate and environmental factors on fish early life history, growth, reproduction, survival and distribution including invasive species.

You will closely work with colleagues in the Section for Marine Living Resources to integrate fish biology into population dynamics, population genetics as well as statistical and process models describing the impact of bio-physical-chemical ambient conditions. Your working area will overview a combination of research topics and thus require insight, but not necessary expertise in all aspects. Topics include:

  • Investigation of physiological, nutritional, and behavioural ecology including responses to changing environments based on field, experimental and laboratory studies.
  • Analysis of impact of biotic and abiotic factors on physiological processes, ontogeny and phenology.
  • Regulation of bioenergetics and metabolism across size ranges and among species under different environmental conditions.
  • Integration of molecular tools to study and understand organismal physiology, morphology and phenotypic development.
  • Characterisation of life history and fitness optimisation.
  • Investigation of factors of importance for fish welfare in fisheries and aquaculture.
  • Application of experimental and field data in modelling physiological process, fish performance and demography under different environmental and anthropogenic forcing and climate change.

The professorship is important for maintaining the research areas international scientific top level as well as further development of the core disciplines, engagement in education, and research-based, public consultancy. As a successful candidate for the professorship, you will have:

  • Demonstrated good abilities to conduct research at the highest international level and disseminate research results - both to scientific peers and to decision-makers in the public domain.
  • A track record strengthening international networking and to win and manage large-scale research projects based on public and private funding sources.
  • Documented successful teaching experience as you are expected to take a lead role in teaching at BEng, BSc, MSc and PhD levels.
  • Experience and a good reputation as a supervisor of students, PhDs, and postdocs, and an inspiration and a role model for our young scientists. Your contributions to our research-based education will assist DTU in promoting DTU’s leading role as a technical university.
