Hours: Full Time

Closes: 10th July 2025
Job Ref: MED169225

Applications are invited for a full-time Senior Technical Specialist position in the laboratories of Catarina Gadelha and Bill Wickstead, to join a programme of research on key aspects of African trypanosome biology. For this extracellular parasite, the cell surface is the primary point of interaction between the organism and the environment – that being the human host or the fly vector. Successful infection and transmission rely on the molecular interactions that take place at this interface. These interactions are, in turn, encoded in the specialised organisation of the trypanosome genome. The post holder will provide research support to the groups, being involved in a programme of work funded by the NC3Rs to understand and disrupt trypanosome survival in vivo. The post will support exciting projects using host infections, quantitative ‘omics, molecular cell biology and bioinformatic approaches.

This post is available from 1st August on a fixed term for 24 months in the first instance. Hours of work are full time (36.25 hours).

Qualifications, experience and competencies

Candidates should hold a BSc in Biological Sciences or related subject area (or be near to completion of such). Successful candidates will have previous experience in molecular cell biology and demonstrable skills in data analysis. Previous experience in growth, genetic manipulation and cell biology of trypanosomes (or transferable experience from other systems) and/or in genomic methods including Next-Generation DNA Sequencing and multiplexed-library sample production is desirable but not essential.

Application

Applicants should include a cover letter briefly describing their research skills to date and current research interests, together with an up-to-date CV and two references.
