Job overview
The Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) Manager oversees all operational aspects of the BRC. He/she works independently under the direction of the BRC Co-Directors. Employment is through the host Trust. The BRC is a partnership between Moorfields Eye Hospital and the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology.
The BRC Manager ensures that the BRC portfolio of research is managed effectively. He/she ensures that relevant information relating to the research and its progress is communicated to all stakeholders.
He/she works with the Co-Directors to establish and maintain complex internal and external relationships, both within the local region and across the country to develop the research and ensure its relevance to its partners and the NHS. The post-holder works with individuals at all levels of seniority.
The post-holder is instrumental in recruiting and managing the BRC’s administrative and research staff, budgetary planning, reporting, and designing and implementing operational procedures to ensure the transparent and efficient integration and running of the research programmes, in collaboration with all the partner organisations. He/she establishes and maintains procedures for the transparent recording and reporting of the research programmes, and financial and administrative matters.
The BRC Manager is a key member of the team preparing and writing any application for a new BRC beyond the term of the current BRC, and coordinates all aspects of this application.
Main duties of the job
Communication: Communicate within Moorfields and UCL, and with other Trusts, universities and external agencies in the private, voluntary and public sector. Assimilate, analyse and communicate large volumes of complex information to all stakeholders.
Regulatory compliance: Ensure compliance with all clinical and research governance requirements.
Organisation and Planning: With the BRC Co-Directors, plan, support and deliver complex programmes of support for work across all themes, allocating appropriate budgets, monitoring and reviewing to ensure delivery to time and budget. Adjust plans as required if progress is not as expected.
Service Development and Research: Oversee all operational aspects of the setup and management of the BRC, supporting the Co-Directors to deliver the BRC contract, and developing policies/procedures as required.
Finance and Resources: Budget holder for BRC budget. Procure assets and supplies for the BRC. Ensure financial agreements are in place and adhered to, enabling the flow of funding between multiple organisations. Monitor BRC budgets within the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology.
Leadership and Management: Recruit and manage the BRC’s administrative staff. Directly manage the administrative functions of the BRC.
Information Resources: Ensure appropriate information systems are utilised to deliver the BRC programme of research. Develop and produce reports using a range of information sources.
