University of Sheffield - School of Medicine & Population Health

Location: Sheffield, Hybrid
Salary: £38,249 to £46,735
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Fixed-Term/Contract
Placed On: 26th June 2025
Closes: 23rd July 2025
Job Ref: 1248

We are inviting applications for the role of Postdoctoral Research Associate working on an exciting new project investigating regulation of gene expression and splicing, and how this links to human disease. You will join the research team of Dr Jenny Lord based in Sheffield Institute for Translational Neuroscience (SITraN) at the University of Sheffield.

This is a computational role that will involve applying innovative analytical approaches to some of the largest ‘omics datasets available to investigate regulatory elements and interactions affecting splicing and the non-coding genome. You will lead investigations into how genetic variants in these regions observed in cohorts of individuals with common, complex disorders, or rare Mendelian disorders link to the development of those conditions. This will have direct translational applications, generating new diagnoses for individuals with disease, and new insights into disease mechanisms.

You will be expected, with guidance from the PI, to identify and adapt relevant methodologies, handle large data sets, plan and implement large scale computational analyses, compile and present results, contribute to writing publications, present at lab meetings and conferences and contribute to other activities in the group as needed (e.g. supervision of student projects).

You will have a PhD in bioinformatics, computational biology, genomics or a related field. You should be experienced in using the command line and a relevant programming language (e.g. python, R) in a research context. The ideal candidate would have a strong understanding of genomics and experience conducting ‘omics analyses in a research setting. You should be highly motivated, collaborative, and inquisitive.

We will welcome you into a vibrant, collaborative and diverse research environment, which values its people and helps them to achieve their best. The post comes with a training and travel allowance, generous annual leave and other benefits. The post will be hybrid with a split between on campus and remote working, and flexible working arrangements are supported.

We build teams of people from different heritages and lifestyles from across the world, whose talent and contributions complement each other to greatest effect. We believe diversity in all its forms delivers greater impact through research, teaching and student experience.
