The School of Health Sciences is looking for a passionate, hardworking health care student, on track to complete the 2nd year of their degree studies with a predicted 2:1 or above at the University of Nottingham. The academic internship offers the opportunity to step off your course for one year to gain experience of research and teaching at one of the highest-ranking Universities in the Midlands. It will offer a unique opportunity to consider an Academic or Clinical Academic Career, working with and being mentored by highly experienced and qualified researchers and teachers. You will work as part of a research group and support teaching to students in their Foundation and 1st year of their degree programme. You will be expected to complete a project on health education/research and where possible, share these findings at a conference. With the School of Health Sciences supporting and nurturing your development, this opportunity will help you decide where to take your career once you have completed your degree.

You will have the opportunity to:

  • Experience health research in a defined setting as a member of the dynamic culture of a School of Health Sciences (SoHS) Research Group
  • Teach and support students in their Foundation year and 1st year of their degree programme
  • Investigate an issue related to health education or research that interests you but is aligned to a SoHS Research Group, producing a short report to the School’s Management Board at the end of your term, submitting a conference abstract, sharing your findings at a conference and achieving a number of competency skills
  • Be mentored by an experienced researcher and/or teacher
  • Work towards Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (AFHEA)

The School is looking for someone who:

  • Is predicted a 2:1 classification at the end of year 2 at the University of Nottingham
  • Is studying BSc Nursing, Midwifery, Physiotherapy or Sports Rehabilitation at the University of Nottingham
  • Has excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Is organised with excellent time management skills
  • Is able to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Is interested in having time to consider an Academic or Clinical Academic Career
  • Is ambitious and enthusiastic

Conference costs related to your project of up to £1000 are available for each intern funded by philanthropic donation.

Are you on a student visa? If so, please note that this may well impact your visa as you will be interrupting your studies for a year and may not be able to apply.

We encourage all those who meet the criteria to apply and would particularly welcome applicants from ethnic minority groups.

All applicants will be required to interview for the internship and will be asked to present a proposal.

This post is fixed-term for a period of 1 year starting on 09 September 2025. Hours of work are full-time (36.25 hours per week) however applications are also welcome from candidates wishing to work part-time (minimum 29 hours per week). Please specify in your application if you wish to work part-time and the number of preferred hours. Job share arrangements may be considered.
