Department of Sociology

We are internationally renowned for our critical and creative approach to empirically and theoretically studying society and culture. As a department we are interested in pushing the discipline forward and are known for pioneering ‘Live Sociology’ - focusing on contemporary issues, using innovative methods and celebrating the sociological imagination.

Role Summary:

This 0.8 FTE Lecturer in Sociology position involves teaching undergraduate modules including, but not limited to, Confronting Climate Crisis (3rd year Sociology module) and Introduction to Philosophy: The Problem of Ethics (1st year PPE module). The successful candidate will also serve as a personal tutor to undergraduate students, providing academic and pastoral support, and will supervise undergraduate dissertations. The role requires a strong commitment to high-quality teaching and student engagement across the department’s undergraduate programmes.

Main duties:

  • Adapt and deliver undergraduate teaching on modules including Confronting climate Crisis and Introduction to Philosophy: The problem of Ethics
  • Prepare and assess coursework and examinations, providing timely and constructive feedback
  • Supervise undergraduate dissertations, offering academic guidance throughout the research and writing process
  • Act as a personal tutor to undergraduate student, supporting their academic progress and well-being
  • Contribute to curriculum development and enhancement of teaching practices within the department
  • Participate in departmental meetings and administrative duties as required
  • Engage in scholarly activity to maintain subject expertise and support teaching excellence 
  • You will be required to undertake any other duties as may reasonably be required
  • Ensure that you are aware of and aligned with Goldsmiths' Regulations, Strategy, and Objectives to work together to proactively advance Equality and Diversity
  • At all times to help maintain a safe working environment by participating in training as necessary and following the Goldsmith's Health and Safety Codes of Practice and Policy
