Background

The Doctorate in Counselling Psychology was launched in 2010 and has subsequently established itself as one of the leaders in its field. It is the only counselling psychology programme to be situated in a Russell group university within the UK and prides itself upon the way that it supports students to develop by providing excellent teaching within a research-intensive environment. The programme has ongoing approval with Health and Care Professions Council and is accredited by the British Psychological Society.

The programme is situated within the Manchester Institute of Education (see below). The institute offers a wide array of programmes that introduce students to the way in which psychology and education meet. This includes providing undergraduate and postgraduate taught programmes and two professional doctorate programmes – the Doctorate in Educational and Child Psychology programme and the Doctorate in Counselling Psychology.

Many of the academics linked to these programmes also contribute to the Education and Psychology Research Group. As such, the institute has a vibrant postgraduate and research community that is at the cutting edge of research developments focusing upon mental health and wellbeing.
