Job context

The School of Business and Management at Queen Mary University London is internationally recognised for research and teaching. The School seeks to sustain and enhance a distinctive research and teaching profile and ensure a supportive and intellectually challenging business and management environment. 

The SSO will respond to and plan for the growing demands of the School’s increasing student expectations in relation to taught programmes, and to the School’s commitment to providing all students with appropriate support in order that they might achieve their full potential in their programmes of study.

Job purpose

The Student Support Officer will work closely with the Teaching & Learning teams, the Student Engagement Manager and Senior Tutors with a unique and particular emphasis to deliver one-to-one student support for undergraduate and postgraduate students who require academic regulatory information, module choice information and pastoral support. Whilst this is to some extent a pastoral role, it is not a counselling position. The Student Support Officer will work in a team alongside an academic writing tutor and a maths and statistics tutor and will signpost students to other colleagues and central service provision for additional support as appropriate. The SSO will lead on supporting those students showing cause for concern through metrics that measure engagement and performance, and will provide support for the administration of the extenuating circumstances process with the Student Engagement Manager.

About You

The ideal candidate will have a thorough knowledge and understanding of the work practices, processes and procedures relevant to student support. They will have proven experience with, and a creative approach to, problem solving and responding flexibly to planning and change within general policies, procedures and guidelines. A strong commitment to providing excellent student support and the ability to develop appropriate evaluations for student success.
