Job description:

The Role

Accountable to Course Director for Learning Communities through the Office of the Director or Deputy Director of Medical Studies, to be a tutor supporting groups of medical students as part of the Learning Communities strand of the MBBS curriculum.

PPD Tutors need to be on the General Medical Council (GMC) Specialist register (any recognised specialty), GP register or equivalent level of experience, and in a substantive senior clinical role. We would particularly welcome applications from Clinicians in the secondary care settings.

This is a flagship initiative of the MBBS programme forming a core component of our curriculum aim of developing doctors as "professionals" alongside their scholarly and practitioner skills. The programme is committed to developing student's sense of identity and belonging within medical school and will shape and support students' professional development.

Learning Communities consist of small groups of students led by a Personal and Professional Development (PPD) Tutor, who meet regularly through the degree programme. These tutors facilitate the delivery of a curriculum focussed on aspects of the art of medicine and professional development that do not fall under a particular specialty or domain. The creation of longitudinal relationships with students also allows the tutor to adopt a mentoring role and will enable students to develop and grow within a supportive but challenging environment.

Learning Communities were introduced to the MBBS curriculum in the academic year 2024/25 for Years 1 and 2 and will be rolled out to Year 3 in the next academic year. As such the curriculum and course content is currently in development. Tutors will be expected to commit to a regular weekly session on Friday mornings to support a small group of students in each year of the programme. As the idea is to have a longitudinal relationship with students over the course of their time on the degree, tutors should be anticipating a long-term commitment and aim to take most annual leave during university holidays. There is a comprehensive training programme for tutors and opportunities to input and shape the curriculum.

The appointment is part time and tenable for 4 years in the first instance.

The University has developed an Teaching and Scholarship Role Profiles document which summarises the range of activities that colleagues may be expected to perform.

Informal enquiries and further information may be made to Dr Nicola Mulgrew, Course Director - Learning Communities via nicola.mulgrew@newcastle.ac.uk or Dr Nadia McAllister, Personal and Professional Development Tutor (Learning Communities) via nadia.mcallister1@newcastle.ac.uk.
