Do you have a passion for Roman archaeology and teaching? Birkbeck, University of London, has an excellent opportunity for an Associate Lecturer to teach in 2026.

The School of Historical Studies is looking to recruit a part-time, Associate Lecturer to deliver lectures, seminars, site-visits, and associated assessment supervision and marking for a single, 30 credit, module. The module is level 7 and is timetabled for Thursday evenings 6-9pm, Spring term January - March 2026.

The weekly topics for the module are:

  • Approaching slavery in the Roman World
  • Becoming Enslaved
  • The Material Culture of Slavery 1: Confinement and Control
  • The Material Culture of Slavery 2: Hidden Lives
  • The Enslaved Body
  • Slaving Landscapes
  • Comparative approaches
  • Slavery, Violence and Roman Imperialism
  • Manumission and Freedmen
  • Visualising Slavery

You should have good knowledge of historiographical and theoretical debates in the archaeology of enslavement, of Roman archaeology, and have completed or be near completion of a PhD. Some experience teaching a diverse group of students at postgraduate level is also essential.

Your role will be to deliver teaching to Birkbeck students, in order to enable them to complete their studies successfully, and to undertake all related course administrative duties as required, including supervising selection of essay topic, and marking presentations and essays.

Further to the person specification, additional essential requirements for this role are:

  • A PhD (or equivalent) in an appropriate specialism or be near completion.
  • Teaching experience at undergraduate level.
  • A good developing track record of research in the field.
  • A good understanding of different teaching and learning methods, and experience in working with students from a range of backgrounds.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills, as well as good administrative skills.

Remuneration
Payment is based on an hourly rate depending on length of continuous service with the College (starting rate £68.13 per hour inclusive of pro-rata London Allowance and holiday pay) for contact hours worked. This hourly rate is based on the starting point of Grade 7 and is inclusive of a ‘Duties Related to Teaching Multiplier’ at 2.5 which covers preparation, teaching, administration, assessment marking and other examining duties in connection with the course.
