Research and External Engagement (REE) is a new integrated service dedicated to driving forward the University’s ambitions for, research, innovation, skills and enterprise. This professional service works to support our students, drive research excellence, upskill and reskill the regions workforce, strengthen relationships and engagement with our alumni, business and community partners.

The Head of Research Excellence will be responsible for leading on the preparation and coordination of the universities submission to the Research Excellence Framework (REF) in 2028 and follow on REF submissions. Working closely with the PVC for Research and Knowledge Exchange, research leaders, and the Director of Research and External Engagement, they will provide strategic support and insight for the shape and structure of the REF 2029 submission.
The successful candidate will have excellent knowledge and expertise on the HEI sector’s REF requirements, having been significantly involved in past REF submissions. A highly skilled communicator and planner, with a proactive dynamic approach and mindset they will comfortable liaising at all levels throughout the university and provide the key link with Research England for REF. As a passionate team manager with proven experience and a track record in supporting REF in previous assessments.
About you
We are looking for an individual with extensive experience in REF preparation and submission. Liaise with and influence external stakeholders and special interest groups across the Higher Education sector on the REF, including Research England to place the university in the best environment in the preparation process.
You will need to work with research leaders, senior management and your team, demonstrating a detailed knowledge of sector developments and best-practice in areas allied to this remit.
You will need to work collaboratively with your team, across REE and the university community to develop UWE’s a comprehensive approach to the REF, including the development of case-studies and approach to the various elements of the submission.

This post is based at our lively Frenchay campus where we have invested in the latest facilities and resources to give both our staff and students access to everything they need to succeed.
